2018 Minutes of the MHS Alumni Banquet
The 70th Annual Morocco High School Banquet was held in
the Morocco School Gymnasium Saturday May 26th, 2018 The Morocco Alumni Association held their
annual Banquet at the Morocco Gymnasium.
There were approximately 125 alumni and guests attending the banquet
served by Country Table of Kankakee, IL.
We had a very good turnout for our “Old Gold & Black” social hour
preceding the banquet. Everyone was
visiting and catching up with former classmates and having a great time. President Carol
Potts Warring ’63 welcomed everyone back to the gym where we graduated so
many years ago. Carol also thanked
Charis Vander Plaats for providing her wonderful music for us during our
social hour and banquet. Charis did a wonderful job
with a variety of her selections. President Carol
Potts Warring ’63 had all the men and woman who had served in the U.S. Armed
Forces stand up and they were honored with a round of applause and thanked
them for serving our country. Carol
then led all of us in the “Pledge of Allegiance”. Bonnie Barnett
Storey ’57 gave the invocation preceding the banquet. The honored classes got to go first, then
all the other alumni went to enjoy our wonderful meal. This year we had two young girls, Rain
Bushman and Hope Williamson, who assisted some of our older alumni during our
banquet and then helped clean up. They
are the granddaughters of Mike Williamson and nieces of Pat Williamson Reyes.
Thank you girls for all your help, it was very much appreciated. Connie Ackors Sell
’63 gave the Treasurer’s Report. All the
previous year’s minutes can be read on the Morocco High School Web-Site. Please check out MHS Web-Site, it is full
of a lot of great information on our school and exciting articles that have
happened to a lot of our alumni that are very interesting. Judy Cupp Schultz ’58, our Historian does a
great job keeping us informed with all the history that comes with MHS. Please go to our web-site and see for
yourself. Very interesting!! President Carol
Potts Warring ’63 handed the microphone over to Dan Blaney who talked to us
about the Ruth Corbin Scholarship now known and maintained by the
Jasper-Newton Community Foundation. To
keep our scholarship fund going, he had baskets passed around for the free
will donation. With the money that
Connie Ackors Sell ’63, treasurer, had already received in the mail and the
money collected at the alumni totaled $1065.00 which will be turned over to
the Foundation. We want to thank
everyone for their generous donations!
This year’s 2018 Scholarship Award went to Allie Decker, the parents
of Randy & Julie Decker and granddaughter of Steve ’64 and Judy Holderby ’65 Brandt. Allie will be attending Purdue
University in Business Ag. Beverly Sherman
Bingham ’64 got up and invited everyone to come to the Morocco Beaver Fest
which was located behind our Morocco Pool this year. She informed us of all the things that were
going on and that this was the first time for our Beaver Fest festivities and
was hoping for a good turnout. Hope to see you there! President Carol
Potts Warring ’63, talked about the election of the officers. She said it is always hard to fill the
president and vice-president positions, since they change every year. We hope someone will step up and fill these
positions. After some discussion,
Carol then presented the new officers:
President, Mike Shireley ’68; Vice-President, Cheryl Merchant Newell
’68; Secretary/Treasurer, Connie Ackors Sell ’63; Recording Secretary,
JoAlice Warne Belt ’65; and Historian, Judy Cupp Schultz ’58. The alumni members voted and accepted the
nominations for officers for 2018. Carol then presented three of the
officers, Connie, JoAlice and Judy with beautiful plants in appreciation for
their service. President Carol
Potts Warring ’63, introduced Hettie Bailey Abbott, the oldest alumni from
the class of 1938, her 80th Anniversary. Hettie was presented with a beautiful vase
of flowers and a round of applause! There was no one
attending from the honored classes of 1943 or 1948. For the honored
class of 1953, was Marjorie Ross Jenkins which was her 65th
Anniversary from MHS. She was the only
one present and didn’t want to talk but said she enjoyed being at Morocco
High School. Don Hunter spoke
for the honored class of 1958, 60th Anniversary. Don introduced 11 of his classmates that
were present. He talked about all the
fun they had in school and remembered having so much fun decorating for the
Prom. Talked about the sock-hops they had and a lot of dancing! He had so
many wonderful memories here at MHS and all the fun times they shared with
each other. He was glad to be back
and see some of his classmates again. Janet Barnett
Armstrong spoke for the honored class of 1963, 55th
Anniversary. Janet spoke of their
party they had at the American Legion with 17 classmates present and for the
Alumni Banquet there was 16 classmates present. They had so much fun visiting and catching
up with each other. Cheryl Merchant
Newell spoke for the honored class of 1968.
Cheryl thanked everyone for having them here. Said it was a bittersweet time for them
because they loved Morocco High School, then was selected for the first class
to be at North Newton. It was very
nice, but it wasn’t home. She introduced all 5 of her classmates that were
there. She said that before they went
to NN, they had 38 classmates and after consolidation, they had 69 classmates.
She spoke of how much they liked MHS and remembered as a junior they put on a
play “My Fair Lady” with singing parts which was so much fun. She also said it was wonderful to see all
the people she hadn’t seen in a long time here tonight. President Carol
Potts Warring ’63 asked all the former cheerleaders to step forward and lead
us in the school song. Cheerleaders
were: Carol Potts Warring ’63; JoAlice Warne Belt ’65; Judy Warne Armstrong ’58; Linda Mathino Gibson ’57; and Kathy Christenson Wiseman ’58. Motion was made to
adjourn and seconded. Passed. The day before the
Alumni is when the preparations begin our Saturday banquet. On Friday in the afternoon, Ron DeYoung, FFA and his students from North Newton High
School transported tables to us from NN.
A big thank you to all these young people, their sponsor and the NN
School Corporation. At this time, the
tables are moved around where we want them, and the coverings and decorations
are added. Many hands make this an
easy task. This year those who arrived
and worked to get this all done were:
Mike & Karen McClatchey; John &
Carol Warring; Dave & Connie Sell; and Mike Shireley with his
grandchildren, Mikala & Katie Martin. After the banquet
and the guests have left, is when the gym has to be cleared and ready for
school on Monday. A big thank you to
everyone who helped to get this accomplished.
It is a lot of heavy work taking down tables, and folding all the chairs,
then putting them away. Again, a “thank you”
to all who helped us make our 2018 MHS Alumni a success! JB, MHS Recording/Secretary |
